Card Copying & Moving
Learn how to enhance Trello cards by adding labels for organization, setting due dates for scheduling, attaching files, writing descriptions, and creating checklists to track progress.
Learn how to copy cards in Trello to duplicate content across lists and boards. This feature helps you replicate card information, maintain templates, and organize work efficiently without recreating content from scratch.
When to Copy Cards
Card copying is valuable when you need to:
- Create recurring tasks or templates from existing cards
- Duplicate cards to different stages of your workflow
- Share cards across multiple boards while maintaining the original
- Create backup copies before making significant changes
Copy a Card
To access the copy functionality, navigate to any board containing the card you want to duplicate. The copy feature preserves the card's content, attachments, and customizations while allowing you to place it in a new location.
Click on the card you want to copy from any list on your board. This opens the card details modal where you can access all card management options.
In the card details modal, locate and click the Actions button in the right sidebar. This opens a menu with various card management options including copy, move, and archive functions.
From the actions menu, click Copy to open the card copying dialog. This displays options for customizing the copy, including the name and destination.
In the Name field, enter the title for your copied card. By default, Trello uses the original card's name, but you can modify it to distinguish the copy or reflect its new purpose.
Click the destination list dropdown to select where you want to place the copied card. You can choose any list on the current board or select a different board entirely.
From the dropdown menu, click on the target list where you want the copied card to appear. In this example, "Doing" is selected as the destination list.
Click the Create card button to finalize the copy process. Trello will create the duplicate card with all selected content and place it in the specified destination list.
Click the close icon to return to the board view. Your copied card now appears in the selected destination list and is ready for use.
What Gets Copied
When you copy a card, Trello duplicates most of the card's content and properties:
- Card title and description
- Labels and color coding
- Checklists and checklist items
- Attachments and cover images
- Custom fields (if enabled)
Comments, activity history, and member assignments are not copied to the new card. The copied card starts with a fresh activity timeline.
Advanced Copy Options
The copy dialog provides additional customization options:
- Board Selection: Choose to copy cards to different boards within your workspace
- Position Control: Specify the exact position within the destination list
- Selective Copying: Choose which elements to include in the copy (available in some Trello plans)
Best Practices
- Use descriptive names: Modify the card name to reflect its new context or purpose
- Consider templates: Create template cards that you can copy repeatedly for standardized processes
- Update assignments: Remember to assign team members to copied cards as needed
- Review dates: Update due dates and start dates on copied cards to match their new timeline
For frequently copied cards, consider creating them in a dedicated "Templates" list. This makes it easy to find and copy standardized cards whenever needed.
Copy vs. Move Cards
Understanding when to copy versus move cards helps optimize your workflow:
- Copy when: You need the card in multiple locations, want to preserve the original, or are creating variations of a template
- Move when: The card should only exist in one location and you're updating its status or ownership
For information about moving cards between lists, see Managing Cards documentation.
Summary
Card copying is an essential feature for maintaining templates, duplicating work across projects, and organizing cards efficiently. The process preserves most card content while allowing you to customize the name and destination. Use copying strategically to streamline repetitive tasks and maintain consistency across your boards.
