Comments & Collaboration

Learn how to enhance Trello cards by adding labels for organization, setting due dates for scheduling, attaching files, writing descriptions, and creating checklists to track progress.

Comments on Trello cards enable team members to communicate directly about specific tasks, providing updates, asking questions, and sharing context without cluttering external communication channels.

When to Use Card Comments

Card comments are ideal for:

  • Providing status updates on task progress
  • Asking questions or requesting clarification about specific tasks
  • Sharing relevant files, links, or additional context
  • Documenting decisions or changes made to the task
  • Coordinating with team members assigned to the same card

To access the comment feature, you first need to open a card from any Trello board. Comments are available within the card's detailed view where you can see all card information including description, checklists, attachments, and activity.

You can mention team members in comments using @username to notify them about important updates or questions. Mentioned users will receive notifications about the comment.

Comment Management Features

Once comments are added to cards, several management options become available:

  • Edit comments: Click on your own comments to modify their content
  • Delete comments: Remove comments you've posted if they're no longer relevant
  • Reply to comments: Continue conversations by adding follow-up comments
  • View activity timeline: See all comments in chronological order within the card's activity feed

Best Practices for Card Comments

  • Be specific and actionable: Write comments that provide clear information or next steps
  • Use mentions strategically: Tag specific team members when their input or action is required
  • Include relevant context: Provide background information that helps team members understand the situation
  • Keep discussions organized: Use comments for task-specific communication and external channels for broader discussions

Comments create a permanent record of communication about each task, making it easy to track decisions, changes, and progress over time. This historical context is valuable for project reviews and knowledge transfer.

Notifications and Updates

When you add comments to cards, relevant team members receive notifications through:

  • Email notifications: Sent to card members and mentioned users
  • In-app notifications: Visible in the Trello interface notification center
  • Activity updates: Reflected in board activity feeds and card change logs

This comprehensive notification system ensures that important communication doesn't get lost and keeps all stakeholders informed about task developments.
