This guide explains how to integrate Slack with Trello using the Slack Power-Up, enabling you to send Trello cards directly to Slack channels for enhanced team communication and project updates.
When to Use Slack Integration
The Slack integration is ideal for teams that use both Trello for project management and Slack for daily communication. It allows you to:
- Share project updates instantly with relevant team members
- Get feedback on specific cards without switching platforms
- Keep communication channels informed about task progress
- Create transparency across different project stakeholders
Navigation
To access Power-Ups, navigate to any Trello board and look for the three dots menu (overflow menu) in the board header, then select Power-Ups from the dropdown menu.
Setting Up the Slack Power-Up
Click the three horizontal dots (overflow menu) icon in the top-right corner of your Trello board header to open the board options menu.
From the dropdown menu, click Power-Ups to open the Power-Ups directory where you can browse and manage integrations for your board.
Browse the available Power-Ups and click on the Slack integration card. The Slack Power-Up description mentions connecting your communication and collaboration apps so that no ideas or tasks fall through the cracks.
Click the Add button to install the Slack Power-Up on your current board. This will enable Slack integration features for this specific board.
Click Close Power-Ups directory to return to your board view. The Slack integration is now active and ready to use.
After adding the Slack Power-Up, you may need to authenticate with your Slack workspace and grant necessary permissions for the integration to function properly.
Sending Cards to Slack Channels
Once the Slack Power-Up is installed, you can send any Trello card to a Slack channel for team discussion and updates.
Click on any card in your board to open its detailed view. In this example, we're selecting the Google Drive Test 1 card.
In the card details sidebar, locate and click the Power-ups section to see available integration options for this card.
Click on the Slack option in the Power-ups section to access Slack-specific actions for this card.
Click Send to channel... to open the channel selection dialog where you can choose which Slack channel should receive this card.
Select the desired Slack channel from the list. In this example, we're choosing #win channel. The card details and link will be sent to this channel for team visibility.
The card has been successfully sent to the selected Slack channel. Team members in that channel will now see the card details and can click through to view or edit the card in Trello.
Integration Benefits
The Slack-Trello integration provides several advantages for team collaboration:
- Real-time Updates: Share project progress instantly without manual copying
- Contextual Discussions: Team members can discuss specific cards within relevant Slack channels
- Reduced Platform Switching: Keep conversations in Slack while maintaining project structure in Trello
- Improved Visibility: Stakeholders stay informed about project developments through their preferred communication channel
Best Practices
- Use specific channels for different project types or teams to maintain organized communication
- Send cards at key milestones (completion, deadlines, or when feedback is needed)
- Ensure card titles and descriptions are clear since they'll be visible in Slack
- Consider setting up automated notifications for critical card updates
The Slack integration also supports sending cards to direct messages for private discussions about specific tasks or when you need to get individual feedback without involving the entire team.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- If channels don't appear: Verify you have proper permissions in your Slack workspace and that the Trello app is authorized
- If the Power-Up seems inactive: Try refreshing the board or re-adding the Slack Power-Up
- For authentication issues: Check that both your Trello and Slack accounts have the necessary permissions for cross-platform integrations
